About Tom Newell

The decoy is an art form and my motivation is now to make art in the form of a decoy.

After nearly 40 years of carving and painting decoys, competition is no longer my driving force. My carvings are more varied than ever; my patterns created from field sketches and photographs. My carvings are done with knives and small gouges, textured with small grinding stones, and hand painted with artist’s oil paints.

I was born in Beardstown, Illinois and grew up with some of the best waterfowling in the world. I was around decoys most of my life and continued my love of carving as I moved to Southern California then to Washington State. Rosemary and I now reside in LaConner.
